Texas SHOULD NOT Allow Guns On College Campuses

Last year, a new state law was passed that allows students to carry a gun around college campuses as long as they have a license to do so. Now being a college student myself, this terrifies me. Anyone could get a license to have a gun; it could end up in someone's hand where it should not belong. I am many of the students who feel unsafe with this law, not to mention the thousands of parents who worry about their children's safety. However, there are some pro's as there are many con's to this law.

Perhaps the people who do own a gun will feel safe when walking around campus if anyone were to try and harm them. In this scenario, I would think a gun is good to have to ensure the safety of yourself. Despite the minimal pro's, there are many con's with this law being passed. Someone carrying a gun could easily think someone is trying to harm them, and possibly shoot them in a matter of "self defense" when the victim was innocent all along. There is really no reason to carry a gun around a college campus. Though there are thousands of students and one can not ensure that they will be entirely safe at all times, there are other alternatives to use if one does not feel safe. For instance, most universities have policies that can escort a student to their designated area. Also many girls carry around pepper spray which is another alternative that someone could use. This way the pepper spray won't put someone's life in jeopardy.

I cannot stress it enough how unsafe it is to allow college students to carry around guns at college campuses as long as they are licensed. For me, there is no difference between a person who is licensed to have a gun and a person who is not. Either way, I feel unsafe to attend school knowing that many students could have guns there. To parents, students, and other fellow Texans, we must change this law to ensure the safety of those around us. This law is not okay and it must be changed. Together, we are the ones who can change this law to live in a more safe environment.

  1. Texas allows college students to carry guns on campus, which means they can carry packing handguns with the textbooks into their classrooms. It sounds so terrific to me. Being a college student myself, I am against this law and I completely agree with one of my colleague's blog "Texas SHOULD NOT Allow Guns On College Campuses." I agree with her saying, "Someone carrying a gun could easily think someone is trying to harm them, and possibly shoot them in a matter of "self-defence" when the victim was innocent all along." As it takes no time in pulling a trigger instead of going through the effort of holding a knife to stab someone when the victim can still defend themselves.

Although, the people of the United States agree with the idea of keeping guns with them as they can defend themselves when they confront a violent person. I personally do not find it right to allow people keeping a concealed weapon especially the college students on campus. Colleges are emotionally volatile environment and allowing guns on campus turns classroom debates into the crime scenes. I think the gun on college campuses distract the learning environment and brings an air to the campus that you don't feel safe and you feel that you always have to be protected. In addition, colleges are too crowded to safely allow the carry of concealed weapons as any dangerous person might jump someone who is carrying a gun, take his gun, and use it to do harm. As our constitution allows ownership of guns, it's not easy to remove the guns. However, we can definitely slow the usage of it by using a pepper spray or a police baton as an alternative in the matter of self-defence.

Therefore, I completely agree with my colleague's blog and definitely, Texas should change the law soon making the college environment free from the fear of guns.

  2. On Ridhi Patel’s blog, I read commentary about a gun on a college campus and I decided to make comment on this. Since Texas allow people who have the licence to hold firearms for defending themselves, many citizens included me were frightened and worried about their who do not have gun license safety. College is the place where students can study whenever they want and develop their dream and knowledge. However, if guns are allowed to carry on campus will terrify students and college could not be the safe place for studying anymore.
I think a gun is not the best choice to keep individual's safety and like Ridhi said pepper spray could be the good self-defense stuff. Beside pepper spray, there are many self-defense goods on sale in the market so gun should not be allowed on campus. For me, I often go to the library for studying and I would not concentrate on my work if I keep thinking that someone is carrying a gun and this person could present nearby me. Therefore, I agree that gun must not allow on the college campus at least college for the majority of students.

  3. I agree with my colleague who wrote a blog on "Texas Should Not Allow Guns On College Campus" on Patel Perspective. Although Texas has passed the law on Concealed carry the uneasiness of knowing a classmate is carrying a firearm is terrifying she states "Anyone could get a license to have a gun; it could end up in someone's hand where it should not belong." and that's a very true statement people can be unpredictable at times.
In addition, I believe that seeing a colleague carrying a gun can be distracting as most people will disregard the material being taught in class to focusing on themselves and their surroundings due to feeling insecure. I would agree most people will shoot a firearm as self-defense but in cases of coming in contact with an active shooter, most people are likely to hesitate. While others will argue that carrying a firearm ensures their safety there is no guarantee that they will use it to stop an active shooter. I myself do not see a difference between someone carrying a firearm with paperwork as oppose to someone who does not, either way, their is no warranty that my life or anyone else's is not at risk.
Lastly, I agree that there are many alternatives than carrying a firearm as Patel states; "For instance, most universities have policies that can escort a student to their designated area." another example she uses is pepper spray which is a great way to ensure one's safety, but does not jeopardize a majority of people. I do believe this law should be reviewed and changed to ensure a safe college campus without having students fearing of other's carrying firearms.
